Do you check social media multiple times a day? It becomes a habit. When people have a few minutes of down time or if they need a mental break from work for a few minutes...we scroll through our social media feed.
That used to be me too. Now, I am obessesed with checking my phone for other reasons. All my business information is readily available to me on my phone anywhere and anytime. I answer customer messages, review product feedback, and check sales stats constantly. Literally not exaggerating when I say "obsessed".
The rollar coaster of emotions when running your own business is nothing to take lightly. For years, I have been a wife of an entrepeuner, watching the highs and lows from the sidelines. I truly couldn't understand the stress and anxiety he has been feeling all these years until now.
Knowing that your entire financial stability rests on your shoulders is overwhelming. In the days and months when you're exceeding your sales goals you are on cloud nine...only to be down in the dumps when you have a few days that you didn't break your previous record.
You start to wonder where everybody went. You start to panic that maybe it was too good to be true. You question your product and wonder if the market has shifted already or maybe you didn't anticipate the trends correctly. Are my promotions not working? Did I miss the mark on my target market?
It isn't just about sales either. Due to continued growth of Elements, this past week, I made the business decision to purchase a TON of inventory. I had the opportunity to go see the play, Wicked, with my Mom. I was sitting there and broke out in a sweat, wondering if I made a good investment.
P.S. My moment of distraction had nothing to do with the play. It was an amazing play and I would recommend it to anyone. It is simply hard to not think about your business.
Hopefully you surround yourself with people that will give you rationale explanations and talk you down from the ledge. After a few days, things start to normalize and you can breathe again.
So what I am saying is...if you see me acting like a nutcase, cut me some slack! Hopefully you get the "cloud nine Amber" the majority of the time. The other Amber is a scary sight.
Owning your own business isn't for the faint of heart. Kudos to anyone else out there taking the gamble, enduring long days, sleepless nights, and mood swings! Now we have two crazy people in the Skiles house.
