I struggle decorating my home with holiday and seasonal accessories. Why?! Because I have a color scheme and accessories that I already love. The majority of my home is neutral tones with subtle pops of color. Something about disrupting that with bright orange, red, and yellow just doesn't excite me.
So much so that my husband says I am boring. Don't worry...he rebels every Christmas. Two years ago, I came home to a GIANT blow up Santa in our yard and last year he hung huge colored balls from a tree even though I told him that I HATE colored Christmas lights.
You can imagine how happy I am to see that neutral fall decor has become more prevalent. I no longer have to haul out spray paint to cover up obnoxious colors or figure out how to make the room look cohesive without getting all new stuff. Man, I sound like a stick in the mud but that isn't true at all! I just want seasonal and holiday decor to look chic and styled.
So without further ado...here are my top must haves for the 2018 Fall season! Get ready to style your shelves and redecorate your mantel...even that curb appeal can use a sprinkle of Fall Decor. Boring or not here they are!
1. Wheat Stalks
You can buy dried wheat stalks just about anywhere. I bought a bunch from Hobby Lobby and cut them to the sizes I needed. Using wheat stalks can be as simple as tying them together with burlap or ribbon and using it on your shelves to add height. I LOVE switching out all my green fillers with wheat stalks. It is neutral and goes with any existing color scheme.
2. Camel Colored Books
Camel, terra cotta, burnt brown...there are so many names for the color I currently love for fall. Since it is also neutral (I warned you) there are many ways to incorporate camel into your home decor including pillows, rugs, and even furniture. I might be slightly biased but I prefer decorative books. Decorative book sets by Elements are actual books covered in fabric. There are a number of smaller fall decor items so books add needed height and scale.
Looking for something more vintage and rustic? There are many tattered camel colored books available as well.
3. Dusty Color Scheme
When you shop for fall decor this year you will see A LOT of gray, white, and cream decorative items. If you want to bring in some other harvest colors, I recommend dusty or muted shades. I found these perfect spray paint colors at Lowes by Krylon. If you are a DIYer, you can change any decor item with these satin/matte colors. P.S. that mocha color is amazing.
4. Gold Accents
Gold accents are trending in all aspects of design. Fall Decorations will be no different. This leaf is a vintage plate that has been distressed over the years. It is perfect for decorating your shelves and mantel. You simply can't beat finding cute gold accents and repurposing them for home decor. I don't know about you but when I try to spray paint gold, it just never looks the way I want it to, so the real deal is what I recommend.
5. White Mums
I can't wait to hit the greenhouse and get my mums! I will be going with all white this year, similar to this beautiful porch by Liz Marie Blog. Mine will look a little different with a gray house and large black planters but that is the beauty of neutral colors, (Baaahhhh, I said it again) they look good with anything.
6. Decorative Acorns
I know that acorns have been a staple fall decor item for years. However, there are so many DIY crafts you can do to make them look trendy like this homemade acorn by Stone Gable. Two of my favorite things collide with wheat and this cement and gold acorn by VanEch Studio! I am digging the over-sized acorns and pumpkin combination.
7. Burlap (DUH!)
Life just wouldn't be the same without a little burlap mixed in with every season and holiday. You don't have to go burlap crazy, but mix in subtle accents like this framed burlap sign shown by Country Living. If you are a DIYer and want to stamp your own burlap, look for the tighter woven burlap to make sure your paint/stamp shows up crisp.
8. Distressed Books
Unbound, distressed books give a rustic vibe during any season. Elements sells unbound books year round for weddings and home decor. Unless you live under a rock, you know that Modern Farmhouse and French Country styles are HUGE. These books fit in perfectly with both styles.
9. Simple Art
You might already now that I am a fan of abstract art. I don't like it to be too "busy". I think there is something peaceful about simplistic wall hangings and the same concept goes for Fall Decor. This simple leaf is perfect for my shelf decor. It also has the hardware to hang directly on the wall and the versatility to be horizontal or vertical.
I mean, who stops at nine?! I was racking my brain to come up with a number ten and thought why in the world am I forcing it? Meh...nine is the new ten.
So there it is...my boring but oh so classy fall decor for 2018. I would love to hear what your favorite fall decor items are this year!
